Soul Survivors Hometown Tales

Next up is a review of ERIC S. BROWN'S LAST STAND IN A DEAD LAND

Last Stand in a Dead Land
THE MAD SCIENTIST OF HORROR IS AT IT AGAIN... AND IT'S AWESOME!
Eric S. Brown is quite mad! Please know that I mean that in the absolute best way possible. Last Stand in a Dead Land is one of those rare books that will make monster fans cheer with demented glee! The action is fast, hard hitting and constant. Don't let the length of this one fool you, it packs a hell of a punch and all builds up to a finale that is sure to make it's mark on anyone who dares to make their stand in the macabre world that is the genius of Mr. Brown.

And finally we have IAIN McKINNON'S REMAINS OF THE DEAD

Remains of the Dead

Iain Mckinnon's Domain of the Dead was a massively entertaining thrill ride. It's sequel, Remains of the Dead, turns up the intensity several notches. It takes place during the same time as the events in Domain and aims the attention on the remaining group of survivors. What follows is a harrowing journey into a dark, writhing pit of rotting flesh and survival. Remains is fast paced with jolts a plenty and, above all, it's scary as hell! Pick this one up. You won't be sorry.

More to come soon. I'll be reviewing Timothy W. Long's Beyond the Barriers and David Moody's Them or Us. Trust me, you won't want to miss these two.

Also I'll have a few more announcements to tag on.

See y'all later.

OH! One thing I forgot. I created the BOOK TRAILER  for Soul Survivors Volume 1. I am happy to announce that (barring a computer f*ck up of some sort) I will also be doing the trailer for Volume 2! Keep your eyes peeled for that too.

Sometimes... you just need to have some f***ing zombies! - Kingdom of the Dead cover and synopsis

Earlier I announced that my Z-Poc story, "Birthday Wish" would be appearing in the anthology "Soul Survivors: Hometown Tales Volume 1."

Now... I've taken some time to percolate and let the dark muses whisper their rants (and a few dirty jokes here and there) and weave their spell upon me. I started working on a sequel-ish installment that digs a bit deeper into the world of "Birthday Wish" that introduces some new characters and new dangers.

Here's a synopsis:

Deep within the ruins of Lakewood North Carolina, a young boy emerges from a dilapidated elementary school. In search of his family, he sets off across the dead, hungy landscape with the help of an almost etherial friend who may be more than he seems.

Soul Survivors: Hometown Tales goes on sale October 31st
Kingdom of the Dead should be available before the end of the year.
Sticks and Stones is still being tweaked and polished. I'll announce the release date as soon as I can.

Sticks and Stones FREE SAMPLE!

Just to whet you appetite, here's a little preview! }:-)~

Thirty seven minutes had passed before Matt heard light footfalls coming from behind him. He craned his head over his right shoulder, careful not to startle the animal. He caught a brief glimpse of something light brown traipsing toward his position.

He took a quick inspection of his crossbow, making sure it was cocked, safety off and the bolt was in place. The light sounds of cautious movement drew closer. Soon, Matt could hear it just under his feet. He looked down just as the large buck stepped out into full view.

Matt's heart raced. It wasn't the monster buck but it was an impressive trophy. He took a long, deep breath, raised the weapon and trained its sights on the kill zone.

Just a few more steps. C'mon. Just a little closer...

To the left of the trail, a flash of movement caught in Matt's vision just in time to see a thick stick swing out in a wide arc. The stick caught the buck square in both front legs. The bones snapped with an audible crack. The deer collapsed to the cold ground. It thrashed and howled in agony as it tried to flee in vain.

From the tree stand, Matt sat in stunned silence as a massive figure rose from the other side of a thick oak. It was dark, covered from head to toe with thick, matted, reddish brown fur. The thing was slumped over as it rushed toward the broken deer. In a matter of seconds it took the buck's head in its thick hands and snapped its neck in one fluid motion. Then, the creature stood to its full height and examined the kill. Matt's jaw fell slack. The thing was impossibly huge, standing well over seven and a half feet tall.

It retrieved the stick from the ground and slapped it against the trunk of the oak several times. It bellowed out a series of deep, guttural grunts and in moments the forest was flooded with movement.

Six other creatures had stepped from the thickets. Some were female with young ones riding on the mother's backs. Others were varied in size with mild deformities but all looked as if they were built of solid muscle.

Matt felt a growing pressure build in his bladder. What he was seeing was not possible. A nightmare of which he could not wake. He watched as the beasts ripped into the carcass, eviscerated it and ate.

The crossbow shook in his hands. If he was spotted there was no way he could kill them all. If they could climb he was as good as dead. Matt tried to hold his breath and keep silent. He was close to hyperventilating and felt like a small child on a playground surrounded by some of the biggest bullies the world had ever seen. He whispered a silent prayer in hopes that some form of higher power existed and felt the need to be merciful.

Woohoooo! I'm back online! NEW UPDATES

STICKS AND STONES

Computer problems have prevented me from keeping up with this page. Now it seems that all of the problems have been resolved and I can get back to work.

So, first up is an update on  my novelette "Sticks and Stones." I'm hard at work doing edits and fixing goofs (considering the entire story was written on a cell phone office app, there was a ton). Anyway it will be released on Amazon in the near future (hopefully before Halloween) as a deluxe edition which will contain "The Legend of the Mountain Devils" which are the true accounts which inspired "Sticks and Stones" and "Just In Sight."

Also, I've decided to do something a bit different with this one. In the past I have designed my own covers (Carcass, Just In Sight, Night Owls, and a new cover for Carcass II which is floating in some sort of limbo at the moment). This time the cover is being designed by, the very talented, Jason R. Fowler. Keep your eyes on this page for that in the near future.

dieTUNES

I have been asked several times, "what do you like to listen to when you write?" Well, it really depends on my mood, location and what's going on in the story. There are certain songs that always play in the background before writing to help me relax and focus. So I decided that I would compile a list of my 'writing soundtrack.'

Sully Erna's Avalon is a great choice to get relaxed and it really does get the juices flowing nicely.
Type O Negative is really a jack of all trades band when it comes to writing. During the course of one of their albums you can find fuel for atmosphere, emotional scenes, action, humor, dark humor and utter doom.
Otep is perfect for working on high energy scenes and dark subjects.
Murderdolls/Wednesday 13 for the "cut loose, give it Hell and have fun" kind of story.
Tool/A Perfect Circle for the dark and brooding apocalypse type.
Blackmore's Night is good for adding elements of fantasy.
Godsmack I'm a Godsmack fanatic therefore there is always room for Godsmack!
All That Remains is good for characters who need to build courage to power forward. Fear Factory is good for this as well.

Well, there you have it. Those are my most frequent plays while writing.

That's all for now but keep your eyes peeled for more updates soon!

Coming Back Swinging!

Tonight I started working on a new story entitled "Sticks and Stones" and have effectively ended my hiatus! I've outlined everything and have put pen to paper to conjure up something that has been residing in some very dark corners.
I'm excited to get back into the flow of writing again and I'm going to come out of the gate swinging with everything I have.

Its a very personal story that is serving as a therepy session by conjuring up everything that's taken place as of late and banishing it with a shower of blood.

I will post a full synopsis as soon as I can. But for right now.... it's time for some sleep.... it's almost daylight.

Hiatus

Hey there. Just thought I'd drop this in to let you all know that I'm still around. I've been on a bit of a break (not by choice).
Anyway it seems that I am heading toward divorce (it's as fun as it sounds) and I've had a few things that needed to be taken care of. I do have an idea for an upcoming, long-term project. I'm going to work on collecting all of my published stories and throw in some new stuff to be published in paperback. Hopefully I can have that ready before this time next year.

At this time I am without a computer (see nightmare above) so any writing is done on my phone for now. It's a slow process but I'm hoping to have something fresh soon.

In closing I want to thank my Dad, Liz, David Edney, Renee Torres, Red, my Facebook minions and my fellow asylum inmates at Moody's Survivors for keeping me from going bat-shit crazy over the past month and a half.

And especially you all for following me, reading my work, listening to my rants and allowing me to live this dream.

I love you all.

NIGHT OWLS returns as an Amazon exclusive!

One of my first and most graphic stories will be released on the Amazon Kindle very soon. Night Owls was originally published briefly on Smashwords.com. Since I had it unpublished I've been wanting to work it over and fix some of the problems the original had and give it a proper release.
The story follows a sadistic serial killer who has recently claimed his latest victim. As he travels through the winding mountain roads and celebrates his efforts, he finds a beautiful young woman that is just his type. The blood flows as time ticks away for the predator and the prey.
Night Owls will be released at the end of July or early August.

Delightfully Gooey Book Review - Eric S. Brown's Bigfoot War 2

Bigfoot War 2: Dead in the Woods
Eric S. Brown's Bigfoot War was and still is an absolute powerhouse of B-movie style goodness in book form. From the first page to the last gore soaked paragraph it was able to hook you and draw you in.
Now we have Bigfoot War 2: Dead In The Woods and let me just say this... YOU AIN'T SEEN NOTHIN' YET!
BW2 takes place in the aftermanth of the first book where the titular creatures descend upon an unsuspecting neighboring town. What follows is a bloodbath of epic scale. There is no way you will be able to tear yourself from the lightning pace of this book. Brown definately strives to deliver what the readers want and succeeds with flying colors (and fur, blood, bullets, brain matter and any other bit of high quality chunkage.)
In closing, this book is nothing short of mayhem and worth every single penny. If you are a fan of Bigfoot, monsters or horror at all then this is a perfect, fun, summer read (especially if you're going camping).

There's nothing like a good prank...

On Facebook, there is a group called Moody's Survivors which is dedicated to the fans of UK horror author David Moody. The group is filled with a fine assortment of authors and fans and it has became a hub for some of the greatest people you could ever be associated with... including Mr. Moody himself.
I must say that I am very proud to be a member, especially after the events which have taken place recently. David had gone on vacation over the weekend and an idea was presented in his absense that had a hint of mischief...
So a few of us decided to... re-imagine some of his book covers.

 (This was my contribution)

David, having a fantastic sense of humor, had a big laugh and decided not to feed us the zombies.

If you would like to drop by the group and have a look around, simply click here.

Review of Brian Keene's Take The Long Way Home

Ever since I read GHOUL, Brian Keene has been one of my favorite authors. He has always had the ability to hook me within the very first paragraph. I then spend the rest of the day burning through the pages and normally finish the book the same day.
The new edition of TAKE THE LONG WAY HOME  from Deadite Press is no exception. A group of friends on their way home from work quickly find themselves in the middle of a horrible accident on the interstate. Upon further inspection they find that there have been multiple accidents going both directions, as well as planes falling from the sky and a massive amount of people suddenly vanish into thin air with no trace. Could it be the work of aliens? Or could it be the rapture?
Keene wastes no time delving into the good and the evil of humanity as the characters jouney deeper into the new world that lies before them and pulls it off with ease. There is also elements of Keene's pitch black humor which includes a small, but highly amusing, cameo by bizarro horror author Carlton Mellick III.
All in all TAKE THE LONG WAY HOME is classic Keene in all his glory and I highly recommend this and any of his work.

COMING IN JUNE!!!

Details to be announced.

Eric S. Brown's The Night of the Beasts eBook review

Being a massive fan of all things Bigfoot, I was naturally drawn to Eric S. Brown's Bigfoot War series which brings these legendary creatures to a whole new level. So when Mr. Brown made the announcement that he was releasing a few short stories which take place between part 1 and 2, naturally I leaped upon them like a ravenous beast.
Night of the Beasts is a quick but engaging read which takes place within the halls of a hospital after a series of "animal attacks." What follows is an atmospheric, spooky climax that is sure to drag you down screaming for more! And with a .99 cent pricetag, what Bigfoot fan could possibly resist?

Just In Sight FREE SAMPLE!!!!!

The snow had been falling steadily for the past sixteen hours. Emma sat in the warm comfort of her living room sipping on a steaming cup of the strongest coffee that she could stand. Tonight was going to be a bitch, and no amount of wishful thinking was going to change that fact. Third shift as a triage nurse was always interesting to say the least and never a dull moment at Hemlock Hills Memorial Hospital. Doing the job was not the problem, Emma loved her job. No, the problem was her family. Her husband, Teddy, had taken their two boys, Alex and Kevin, out to visit their grandparents for the week. It had bothered Emma some that she had to work the day they left and would have to make the journey a day late. She had never been away from her boys for more than a day. She sipped her coffee again and glanced around the quiet empty house and could feel herself sink into loneliness.
Perhaps I should call, she thought as she glanced at the ivory clock face ticking away her free time with thin obsidian hands.
Nah, its getting late and, more than likely, everyone would be asleep now.
Outside the wind continued to howl. The thick sheets of snow swirled in the wind like dancing giants. To Emma, it was the perfect weather to curl up into a tight ball under warm, crisp sheets and sleep. Oh, how she wished she could just sleep now.
The minute hand inched closer and closer to 10 pm. Emma sighed and downed the last of the coffee in one giant gulp. A few warm drops rolled down the sides of her mouth as she stood up and gathered the rest of her things for work.
Maybe tonight will be busy and it will go by fast.
With that final thought she grabbed her thickest winter coat from the rack, snatched her purse from the kitchen table, and stepped into the cold winter night.
*****
The blasting heater from the four wheel drive SUV was a welcome gift after trudging through the freezing 21 degree wind chill. Emma slowly crept back out of the driveway onto the main road. She shook her head and groaned as the back tires broke loose and spun. The road was always the last to see a state truck equipped with a scrape due to it being so far away from the main arteries leading to the city. She reached down and shifted into four wheel high, and proceeded down the long winding road.
She hated driving in the snow. Teddy, however, loved to trek out into the freshly fallen snow and find a nice spot away from traffic and slide, spin, and drift. Alex and Kevin loved it too; they would always come in and tell about their adventures with their dad up on the old Lowe logging road. Emma had went with them a few times but preferred to just leave it to the men to spend some time together. She liked the snow only while indoors.
There was never too much traffic on their road. Much of the snow was still untouched and the only tire tracks were heading the other direction.
It was another seven miles to the hospital and Emma crawled down the road. It was beginning to get on her nerves already. She had always been known to have a “lead foot” and had the traffic tickets to prove it. She fiddled with the radio hoping that some music would her make the trip a little more tolerable. Her favorite station was a wash of static so she turned the knob and scanned for anything that sounded good. She settled for a local rock station that was playing the top fifty songs of the year. The DJ rambled on and on about some new band that had, “exploded onto the charts and should be a force to be reckoned with.” She had heard the song before and thought it was just slightly above average, but still better than some of the drivel being put out by the “popular bands.”
She reached the first of three deep switchbacks. They were dangerous even on the most pristine conditions. She slowed down even more and eased around the hard curve. There were no other cars on the road so she swerved over to the left side of the road. It was better to hit the ditch on the wrong side than to slide down the sixty foot drop on the right side. Halfway through the turn the rear end slid slightly. Emma’s grip tightened around the steering wheel. She took a deep breath to steady herself and the vehicle, and proceeded to make the turn with no further incident. She let out a heavy breath of relief that fogged up the windshield for a second.
The song had changed to a much heavier, almost thrash-like, song. She tapped her fingers to the wheel to the beat of the furious drums.
The second switchback was just ahead and, already, Emma began to slow. There was a thick overhang of evergreen limbs which kept the snowfall on the road to a minimum.
Maybe the rest of the way will be smooth sailing. She thought. Soon her hopes were deflated as the sight of deep snow reappeared after the turn.

Hey guys, welcome to my new author blog. Here’s a little bit about me. I have been a horror fan ever since I was four years old and watched my first horror movie (I think it was H.P. Lovecraft’s The Un-nameable). Since then I have spent countless hours milling through as many movies, books and short stories as I could possibly stand. I’ve always been interested in writing and I began to take it serious a while back just to see where it would get me. I saw an open submission call for an anthology called Rhonny Reaper’s Roadkill CafĂ©. For two days I worked on a story that centered on of my favorite creatures, Bigfoot.
After a couple of months, and a serious case of writer’s block, I was checking my email and there it was the official list of authors who had made it into the book with my name at the top of the list!
Since then I published my first ebook short entitled Carcass which goes back to the old school days of when vampires were scary and nasty. The story was loosely based on the legends of the Aswang, a vampire like creature said to terrorize the Philippines.
In the months to come I have several other stories on the way including another foray into Bigfoot territory, a zombie apocalypse, some free fiction and a Carcass sequel! I will also be writing reviews to whatever I’m currently reading and posting them here.
Thanks for stopping by… I hope you make it out alive.
